One Size Fits All Doll Dress | Barbie, Poppy Parker & Fashion Royalty

 

Wouldn't it be nice if your fashion dolls could actually share their clothes?

That was the idea behind this one-size-fits-all doll dress. Instead of designing an outfit for only one particular doll body, I wanted to create a handmade dress flexible enough to fit many of the dolls in my collection — from slender fashion dolls to Curvy Barbie.

The result became one of my favorite doll clothing designs.

One Doll Dress for Different Body Types

Anyone who collects fashion dolls knows how different their bodies can be. Even within the Barbie family, there are different heights, waistlines, hips and proportions.

Then add other fashion dolls to the collection and finding clothing they can share becomes even more challenging.

I designed this dress with an expandable elastic waistline so it isn't restricted to one exact waist measurement. The fuller skirt also provides room through the hips, while the simple upper portion allows the dress to adjust to different figures.

I've used this design on many dolls in approximately the 11.5–12 inch fashion-doll range, including:

Barbie • Curvy Barbie • Tall Barbie • Modern Barbie • Vintage Barbie • Silkstone Barbie • Poppy Parker • Fashion Royalty

The exact fit and length naturally look a little different from doll to doll, but that's part of what makes the design so much fun.

From Curvy Barbie to Slender Fashion Dolls

Curvy Barbie was one of the real tests for this design.

A closely fitted dress made for a slender doll may not have enough room to comfortably pass over a Curvy Barbie's hips. By using an elasticized waist and a fuller skirt, I was able to give the dress the extra flexibility it needed.

But I didn't want to solve one fit problem by creating another.

The same dress also needed to look attractive on dolls with much slimmer proportions.

That's where the gathered waist works especially well. The elastic expands when more room is needed and gathers the fabric back in on a smaller-waisted doll.

The result is essentially my version of a one-size-fits-all fashion doll dress.

One Dress, Lots of Doll Closets

One of my favorite things about this design is seeing how the personality of the dress changes depending on who's wearing it.

Put it on a vintage Barbie and it can have a completely different appearance than it does on a modern Fashionista. Move it to a Silkstone Barbie, Poppy Parker or Fashion Royalty doll and the same little dress takes on another look again.

That's also one reason I enjoy photographing different dolls in the same style of clothing. The doll becomes part of the fashion.

Designing Versatile Handmade Doll Clothes

Creating handmade doll clothes isn't always about shrinking human clothing down to doll size. Sometimes it's about figuring out how to make a tiny garment work with very different proportions.

This simple dress became my answer to that challenge.

The expandable waist, fuller skirt and adaptable design allow many of my fashion dolls to share the same wardrobe — whether they're curvy, tall, classic, vintage or slender.

One dress. Lots of dolls. And nobody has to worry about having nothing to wear!
